Pets Competing for Mayor of Taylor Pavilion | Winchester Star

Paws for the People: A Furry Election in Winchester

Politics can be quite a spectacle, especially in Winchester, where the incumbent pet mayor, Craig DaCat, is fiercely contesting his position. The annual “Paws for the People” event, which determines the new furry, feathered, or scaly ruler of the Taylor Pavilion, is currently underway.

Launched by the nonprofit Friends of Old Town, nominations for this quirky election ran through September, with early voting already in progress. Last year, Craig DaCat, an orange tabby, won against a field of 15, raising $2,685 for local animal welfare organizations.

This election got more heated when DaCat made headlines for his political manifesto, declaring his goal of “equity and inclusion” for all pets—except birds, which directly challenged Patsy the African Grey, the first avian candidate. Patsy’s candidacy sparked a back-and-forth, with her playful rebuttals showcased through TikTok-worthy performances.

As of last week, both DaCat and Patsy were struggling in the polls, with five other candidates vying for votes:

  • Polly Newcome (Goldendoodle): “More wags. More walks. More treats.”
  • Chupie Barsotti-Milligan (Sphynx Cat): Admits to lacking qualifications.
  • Bear “Bearbear” DiLello (Golden Retriever): Promises overflowing love.
  • Butters the Corgi: Loves everyone, even if they’ve never met.
  • Oliver (Canine Cancer Survivor): Aims to ban fireworks and monitor mail carriers.

Voting ends on November 7, and each dollar cast as a vote counts. Those wishing to support an aspiring candidate can do so for a $1 donation through the Paws for the People Facebook page or the Givebutter voting website, with all proceeds aiding local animal rescues.

This whimsical election has proven to be popular, outdoing expectations and raising over $7,000 last year alone, highlighting the community’s love for their furry friends.
