Salisbury Cathedral recently hosted its annual pet blessing service, titled “All Creatures Great and Small,” on September 19. The event welcomed over 280 attendees alongside a diverse array of animals, including 79 dogs, cats, guinea pigs, chickens, a tortoise, goldfish, and even a caterpillar.
Revd Ross Meikle emphasized the important lessons pets teach us about compassion, joy, and love. He noted that through caring for animals, we become true stewards of God’s creation. The service also dealt with themes of grief and hope, celebrating the joy pets bring into our lives.
Led by Revd Meikle and Revd Sophie Ferguson, the ceremony featured readings, hymns, and performances by the Salisbury Cathedral’s Girls Choir and Junior Choir, including a rendition of John Rutter’s “All Things Bright and Beautiful.” This event was a heartfelt opportunity for attendees to bless their pets and acknowledge the joy they bring into our lives.
