Pet Safety Alert: Essential Tips to Shield Your Animals from Rabies

Rabies Warning for Alabama Pet Owners

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Alabama Department of Public Health is urging pet owners to take necessary precautions as rabies cases rise across the state. Since last Friday, there have been 39 confirmed rabies cases in animals, primarily among raccoons.

To combat this issue, the U.S. Department of Agriculture plans to air-drop rabies vaccines throughout Alabama. Veterinarians highlight the importance of vaccinating pets as a critical measure for their safety.

State Public Health Veterinarian Dee Jones emphasizes that state law mandates rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats, underscoring its necessity for public health. Keeping pets vaccinated protects both them and their owners, and Dr. Jerome Williams from Red Mountain Animal Clinic advises against approaching stray animals, given the health risks involved.

Even indoor pets aren’t immune to rabies exposure, as unforeseen encounters with wildlife can occur. Officials urge residents to exercise caution with wild animals, particularly bats and raccoons, and avoid handling them, especially if they’re injured or deceased.

If a bat gets inside your home, contact your local health department for guidance. Should an animal bite you, immediate medical attention is crucial. Pet owners are also advised to contact veterinarians if they notice unusual behaviors or potential rabies exposure in their pets.

Stay informed and take action to safeguard your pets and community.
