Dancing with the W2 Stars: Fundraising for Valley Residential Services
Overview
For nine years, “Dancing with the W2 Stars” has been the pivotal fundraiser for Valley Residential Services (VRS) in Walla Walla, and also a source of entertainment for the audience. This year’s event is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Cordiner Hall on Whitman College’s campus.
Event Features
Local “celebrities” participate in the competition, eagerly stepping into the spotlight to dance and be judged. Each of the eight contestants is paired with a professional dancer, rehearsing a ballroom routine for a week, while also engaging in self-promotion to gather sponsorships and donations from friends and community.
Purpose of VRS
The event aims to raise funds to support VRS, which provides crucial services to:
- Adults with intellectual disabilities
- Veterans needing housing and support
- Families striving for stability and permanence
Personal Connection: Dwight’s Story
Sheila shares a personal account of her brother Dwight, who thrived in a loving environment supported by VRS. After a challenging search for appropriate care in rural areas, Dwight found a welcoming home with VRS, where he enjoyed a vibrant life filled with activities, companionship, and caring staff.
The shift to VRS transformed Dwight’s experiences. The support staff treated him with respect and love, welcoming family visits and creating a home-like atmosphere. Dwight passed away at 54, surrounded by family and caregivers who cherished him.
Community Impact
Lawson Knight, a prior winner of the event, highlights its significance, stating it raises substantial funds for community needs, including accessible vans and veteran programs. The annual event has moved to a larger venue, reflecting its growing impact and community involvement.
In closing, the event is not just a competition but a celebration of community spirit and compassion, showcasing the profound difference VRS makes in the lives of individuals and families.
