El Centro Serna is hosting a lowrider exhibition during Sacramento State’s tailgate before the game against North Dakota State on Saturday, September 19, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. This event is part of Latine Heritage Night and will be located outside Hornet Stadium by the Alumni Center.
The exhibition will showcase 15 to 20 lowrider cars, a unique element of Latine culture known for their low profile and hydraulic features. Juana Zaragoza, the director of El Centro Serna, emphasizes the cultural significance of lowriders, stating they connect to the Chicano community and its history. The Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, which fought for rights and education, has deep ties to this cultural expression.
Students like Rocio Mejia view the event as an opportunity to share passions and educate others about lowrider culture. Abbygail Santiago-Sanchez is excited to attend her first car show, looking forward to the atmosphere and community engagement. The exhibition will also feature cars owned by Sac State alumni, highlighting the generational aspect of lowrider culture.
Recent changes in California laws have relaxed restrictions on cruising and car modifications, making the event timely for educating attendees about these developments. Zaragoza plans for a larger car show in spring, aiming to connect with high school students about further opportunities at Sac State.
The exhibition promises snacks, music, and a chance for attendees to celebrate community and diversity on campus. Santiago-Sanchez notes that such events foster a welcoming environment for students.
