As utility bills rise in El Paso, a crucial assistance program for low-income residents is scaling back its support. The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs manages federal funds for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which helps pay utility bills. Local organizations, including the nonprofit Project Bravo, distribute these funds.
Laura Ponce, executive director of Project Bravo, warns that high utility costs are forcing them to limit assistance. While past assistance could cover six months of bills, it has now been reduced to three months. Many households are struggling with mounting bills, with residents like Randy Rivera expressing difficulty in managing the rising costs.
Applications for this assistance will close earlier this year on November 2nd and must be completed in person. Those in need can also contact local organizations for additional support or dial 211 for further assistance.
