Duke Energy Asks Carolinas Customers to Reduce Electricity Use
GREENVILLE, S.C. — Duke Energy is urging customers in North Carolina and South Carolina to voluntarily cut back on electricity usage from 2-8 p.m. on Friday, September 18, to help alleviate pressure on the power grid during peak demand hours.
Ways Customers Can Help:
- Adjust Thermostat: Raise it to the highest comfortable setting.
- Limit Major Appliances: Avoid using washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers.
- Minimize Cooking: Try not to use electric ranges and ovens, as they can increase heat and air conditioning demand.
- Electric Vehicle Charging: Charge vehicles overnight when demand is lower.
“Above-average heat puts pressure on the system during peak hours,” said Kendal Bowman, president of Duke Energy’s utility operations in North Carolina. “Simple actions in the late afternoon and early evening can help reduce strain on the grid and support reliable service for everyone.”
Tim Pearson, president of Duke Energy’s utility operations in South Carolina, acknowledged the inconvenience of reducing electricity use but emphasized its importance: “We’re using every available resource to meet demand so power keeps flowing to our communities.”
Duke Energy serves approximately 3.9 million customers in North Carolina and over 870,000 customers in South Carolina.
