The Torres Community Shelter in Chico has opened the Dukes Pet Park and Kennel, which allows individuals experiencing homelessness to keep their pets while accessing vital services. This initiative, led by True North Housing Alliance and named after a pet that survived the Camp Fire, aims to remove barriers that previously forced people to choose between shelter and their animals.
Executive Director Taylor Bunch emphasized the importance of companionship and support animals provide during challenging times. With a grant secured in 2022, the facility supports residents like Jordan Butterfield, who highlighted how the program helps him manage his life while ensuring his pet is cared for.
Butterfield encourages others facing hardship not to give up, as resources are available for both individuals and their pets, emphasizing the community’s commitment to support during difficult times.
