Colleton County Farmers Concerned About Data Centers, While Other Residents View Them as Future Investment

Colleton County Data Center Controversy: Balancing Development and Agriculture

Colleton County, S.C. has recently approved new regulations for data center developments within its digital infrastructure overlay district. While some residents view this as a financial opportunity, local farmers express concern over the potential threat to their livelihoods, land, and water resources.

Local farmer Louis Buddy Lemacks emphasizes the impact on the environment and agriculture: “We’ve had to run irrigation during a three-stage drought, and with a data center nearby, we worry about groundwater availability.” The digital infrastructure overlay is situated adjacent to his farm, and he worries that insufficient protective measures for farming will lead to dire consequences for local agriculture.

Contrastingly, some residents like Kimber Santorella argue that a data center could bring much-needed revenue to a financially struggling county. Santorella points out that without substantial tax revenue, the county could face severe economic challenges, affecting local education and community services.

While the county has yet to receive any permits for a data center, the community remains divided. Farmers are determined to continue their work as long as they have access to necessary water supplies, while others advocate for development as a solution to local poverty and economic issues.

The ongoing debate reflects a poignant battle between protecting agricultural traditions and embracing potential economic growth.
