UN Grants Palestinian President Abbas Opportunity to Speak Following US Travel Restrictions | News on Israel-Palestine Conflict

The United Nations General Assembly has decided to allow Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to address its members via a prerecorded statement. This comes after the United States announced it would extend visa sanctions on officials from the Palestinian Authority (PA), preventing Abbas from attending in person for the second consecutive year.

Palestine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed approval of the Assembly’s resolution, viewing it as a sign of resilience against efforts to marginalize Palestinian participation. It emphasized that Abbas’s address would be broadcasted as scheduled, highlighting the continued pursuit of Palestinian statehood.

The U.S. Department of State stated that visa sanctions were being extended due to the PA’s failure to meet reform commitments and ongoing actions that the U.S. claims undermine peace prospects. The PA has been criticized by the U.S. for seeking international recognition of statehood outside of direct negotiations and for its financial support to individuals labeled by the U.S. and Israel as convicted attackers.

Despite these sanctions, the PA’s mission to the UN retains a waiver allowing its staff to function, even as individual officials face travel bans. Abbas is expected to advocate for international recognition of Palestinian statehood and emphasize the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, amid growing fears concerning the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

Amnesty International condemned the U.S. decision, calling it a violation of the UN Headquarters Agreement and criticizing the imposition of restrictions that hinder diplomatic engagement. Last year’s similar actions also faced backlash from Palestinian officials and human rights advocates, who argued it violates obligations to facilitate access for UN-invited individuals.
