Saw II: Flesh and Blood – A Retrospective
With the upcoming release of Saw: Genesis, developed by Bloober Team, it’s time to revisit the franchise and focus on Saw II: Flesh and Blood.
Overview
Released in 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Saw II: Flesh and Blood continues the story from the first Saw video game. Players step into the shoes of Michael Tapp, the son of David Tapp (portrayed by Danny Glover), as he seeks answers surrounding his father’s death and confronts the infamous Jigsaw.
Gameplay
The game features various settings, including hotels, factories, and sewers, where players face a slew of traps, making moral decisions about saving others. The gameplay is characterized by:
- Third-person survival horror mechanics
- Puzzle-solving and quick-time events
- Engagement in combat through QTEs, which some have likened to duels in the game Dark Cloud.
Unique Twist
One of the standout aspects is the initial gameplay. Players start as Campbell, a drug addict, who faces a harrowing choice: save himself or a stranger. The twist is revealed later when players learn that the stranger is actually Michael, leading to different endings based on choices made throughout the game.
Reception
Despite its potential, Saw II: Flesh and Blood failed to impress critics, earning negative reviews for perceived shortcomings compared to its predecessor. Many found it lacking and damaging to the reputation of video games.
Future Prospects
With Saw: Genesis on the horizon, there’s renewed hope for the franchise in the gaming world. Bloober Team’s involvement raises expectations for a polished and engaging experience.
