Fifteen children facing critical illnesses embarked on a chartered flight to Walt Disney World on Tuesday as part of a Make-A-Wish initiative, complete with a festive sendoff at the airport. One of the travelers, 7-year-old Alonza Garvin from Northeast Philadelphia, was thrilled to celebrate her birthday just a day before the trip.
“I’m going to Disney World!” Alonza exclaimed, declaring herself “Infinity percent excited!” Alonza, who battles sickle cell disease, was among the children whose wishes were fulfilled by the nonprofit organization. Her mother, Tamarah, highlighted Alonza’s strength, noting the regular medical treatments she undergoes.
The trip offers families a chance to bond away from hospitals. Before departure, celebrations included a DJ, food, and special guests. Jennifer Davis, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, emphasized the importance of creating joyful memories for families during difficult times.
As the flight prepared for takeoff, local fire department members created a water rainbow, enhancing the festive atmosphere. Families are set to enjoy five days of activities at Disney, including park visits and character meetups, marking the beginning of what organizers hope will be an unforgettable experience.
