The mother of Gabby Petito has expressed her frustration towards “armchair detectives” continuing to speculate on her daughter’s tragic death, five years after she was murdered by her fiancé. Petito’s mother, Nichole Schmidt, criticized those generating alternative narratives about the case despite the evidence confirming that Brian Laundrie killed Gabby before taking his own life.
Gabby Petito, 22, went missing in August 2021 while traveling in a van with Laundrie. Although Laundrie’s note admitted to the crime, conspiracy theories about the incident persist, with many suggesting it was a hoax. Schmidt conveyed her sorrow over these unfounded speculations, urging that they should cease, as the case brings ongoing pain to her family.
The couple had been documenting their cross-country travels on social media, with incidents of domestic distress reported to the police. Petito was last seen alive in Wyoming, and her body was discovered weeks later, identified as a victim of strangulation. Laundrie’s remains were subsequently found, containing a confession detailing the circumstances of Gabby’s death. In response to this tragedy, the Petito family has established the Gabby Petito Foundation, focused on supporting missing persons and domestic violence initiatives.
