Dune: Awakening Review
Overview
As a survival genre enthusiast and a fan of Conan Exiles, I was excited to dive into Dune: Awakening, especially with the unique setting away from the traditional forest or island start. The hype around its console release only added to my anticipation.
The Single-Player Experience
The single-player aspect of Dune: Awakening does hold its ground; however, it requires further depth. NPCs populate the map, with most serving as foes, giving combat that familiar fun, reminiscent of Conan Exiles. There are also trading posts with friendly NPCs offering missions and lore, but they often lack depth in dialogue.
The game avoids feeling empty due to the constant threat of attacks, adding an intriguing layer to base exploration. Unlike many survival games, Dune offers a narrative divided into chapters, guiding players through their character’s journey. However, replaying the story tends to feel tedious, and recipe unlocking through the Journey’s storyline can be frustrating.
Customization is adequate, with character creation offering decent options for both genders. However, facial hair options are lackluster.
Look and Feel
Visually, Dune: Awakening impresses from a distance with beautifully rendered sandy landscapes and dynamic lighting. The adventure of maneuvering a vehicle across dunes is thrilling, but closer inspections reveal texture issues. The world can feel overly smooth or lacking detail, especially on surfaces not player-placed. Character models, particularly during cutscenes, often lack emotion, making them appear lifeless.
Final Thoughts
Menu navigation using a cursor is cumbersome, detracting from the overall experience. However, controls are responsive and intuitive, particularly for combat and driving. The driving and vehicle-building mechanics shine as some of the game’s highlights.
Overall, despite some visual shortcomings, Dune: Awakening provides an engaging survival experience filled with exciting combat and immersive gameplay. I’m eager to explore further and hope for improvements in future updates.
