Eight Cherokee veterans have embarked on the 15th Cherokee Warrior Flight to Washington, D.C. to visit monuments honoring their service. They were honored with a send-off ceremony at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa. The group includes mostly Vietnam War veterans, with one 101-year-old World War II veteran and Meda Nix, the only female veteran, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Nix expressed her excitement about the trip, especially looking forward to visiting the Vietnam Wall as a tribute to her family members who also served. Army veteran Rick Young shared his unique enlistment story, noting his anticipation to visit the memorials for fallen comrades. The trip, funded by the Cherokee Nation, highlights their commitment to honoring veterans’ sacrifices, with leaders and community members waving flags as they departed. The veterans will spend three days visiting various memorials before returning home.
