The Transformation of Overtown Performing Arts Center into a Cultural and Community Hub | Lifestyle Highlights

The Overtown Performing Arts Center (OPAC), a historic site built in 1947 as the Ebenezer Methodist Church, was transformed into a vibrant cultural hub by the Overtown Community Redevelopment Agency in the last decade. OPAC has become a cornerstone of the Overtown neighborhood, retaining its gothic architecture and high ceilings, while being utilized for numerous community events, from weddings to free tango classes.

Maya Jackson, the community engagement coordinator for the Southeast Overtown/Park West CRA, emphasized the importance of preserving historic spaces to maintain community identity. OPAC hosts events such as job fairs and connects residents with essential resources like library access and rental assistance.

Nearby, the Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum enhances cultural engagement through its educational initiatives. The museum collaborates with OPAC, organizing events that allow community members to explore cultural experiences without needing to travel far.

The CRA’s support extends to local organizations, such as the Florida Film House, enabling community-driven projects like the 1st Take Youth Film Program, which offers hands-on film-making experiences to local youth, fostering creativity and skill development.

As the CRA and its community partners work together, Overtown continues to thrive, with OPAC serving as a beacon of cultural heritage and community collaboration. This collaborative spirit is highlighted during significant events like Soul Basel, showcasing the neighborhood’s rich cultural offerings.
