Hitachi Energy is set to invest $528 million in a new factory in Gallman, Mississippi, aiming to produce electrical transformers. This investment is a significant part of the company’s planned expansion in U.S. manufacturing and is their largest single investment to date.
The factory, projected to begin operations in 2029, will be about twice the size of Hitachi Energy’s current facility in Crystal Springs, Mississippi. It will focus on mid-range transformers crucial for data centers, semiconductor plants, and other industrial operations with substantial power requirements.
These transformers, described as being the size of a detached garage, differ from larger models used in high-voltage infrastructure. CEO Andreas Schierenbeck emphasized their importance for bridging the gap between transmission transformers and industrial needs.
This new factory is part of a broader $1.5 billion investment by Hitachi to enhance production capabilities in the U.S., with the potential to produce dozens of transformers annually. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright highlighted the necessity of these components for expansion in electrical infrastructure.
