Travelers Are Spending More Per Trip

The travel economy is witnessing significant growth in revenue, outpacing passenger counts—indicative of better pricing power. U.S. travel spending reached $122.8 billion in July, a 5.8% increase from the previous year, even with air passenger volumes below 2025 levels.

Airline data reveals that revenue grew 7.2% across 58 carriers, driven by higher average fares and a $13.2 billion increase in ancillary revenue—a 13.4% rise. Presently, 30 airlines generate over a billion dollars annually from ancillary sales, up from 27 in the prior year.

Hotels demonstrate similar trends, with national revenue per available room increasing 8.2% alongside room demand growth of 2.8%. Luxury travel bookings for fall rose by 59%, suggesting affluent travelers are pushing their trips outside of peak summer times.

Frank Holmes, CEO and Chief Investment Officer of U.S. Global Investors states, “Travel has shifted from a cyclical to a secular growth story,” indicating earnings growth per customer as a more sustainable model than simply filling more seats at existing fares.

The company utilizes its Smart Beta 2.0 investment strategy to track trends in the airline industry through specialized funds, including the U.S. Global Jets ETF (NYSE: JETS). This fund provides investors access to the global airline sector, encompassing operators, manufacturers, and online travel agencies.
