Beaufort County considers temporary halt on data centers amid concerns about water, energy, and agriculture.

Beaufort County commissioners are contemplating a yearlong pause on data center development applications to evaluate how to regulate the industry effectively. Although no data centers are currently planned in the county, the proposed moratorium would allow time for a comprehensive study of potential regulations.

Concerns from residents and officials include the impact on water and energy resources, the use of farmland, and the necessity of incentives for attracting such developments. One resident expressed strong opposition, emphasizing a desire to maintain the county’s rural charm.

Commissioner Randy Walker voiced skepticism regarding the likelihood of developers choosing Beaufort County without significant perks, suggesting that a focus on policies for a moratorium might not be the right approach.

In nearby Pitt County, community support for a data center moratorium was evident, with worries about resource allocation for local residents versus corporate interests. While Pitt County does not have a formal moratorium, Farmville has recently instituted a 12-month pause on data center developments.
