Dorchester Paws Receives $10,000 Contribution to Expand Services
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) — Dorchester Paws has been awarded a $10,000 contribution aimed at expanding its services, including providing free vaccinations and microchips to pets in the community. As the only open-admission animal shelter in Dorchester County, Dorchester Paws plays a vital role in caring for lost and abandoned animals, offering food, shelter, and medical care while aiming to find them permanent homes.
Executive Director April Howard emphasized the organization’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the animals in their care. “Our first goal is to make sure that they are safe and that they have all their basic needs met,” she stated.
Due to the high costs of care, Dorchester Paws heavily relies on donations, community support, and involvement from fosters, volunteers, and adopters. State Senator Sean Bennett highlighted the importance of adoption in addressing the shelter’s continued influx of animals, noting the ongoing need for community engagement.
The funding was nominated by McElveen Buick GMC Summerville through the South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association’s Dealers in the Community program. President Doug McElveen reaffirmed the importance of caring for local animals, having previously supported the shelter by donating its first animal transport van in 2017.
This contribution will aid Dorchester Paws in organizing the upcoming Pet Community Day on Saturday, September 19, which will offer free vaccinations and microchips to pets. Howard expressed enthusiasm, stating, “This will help us serve hopefully double the number of animals we’ve been able to serve at events.”
For those interested in fostering, adopting, or volunteering, Dorchester Paws is located at 136 Four Paws Lane in Summerville and is open from noon until 5:00 p.m.
