Milestones in Shipbuilding
Celebrity Cruises has announced significant developments as it prepares to launch its river cruising operations. The construction of its first river cruise ship, named Celebrity Compass, reached a key milestone with the hull floated and moved to the fitting-out yard. The ship is scheduled to launch in August 2027, marking Celebrity’s entry into European river cruising.
Expansion Plans
In January 2025, Celebrity Cruises unveiled plans to build a fleet of 10 river cruise ships. By mid-2026, the company confirmed contracts for the first four vessels and later committed to building 10 more, totaling 20 ships by 2031. The hull construction commenced in January 2026 at the Zwijnenburg shipyard in Rotterdam, with the hull launch occurring on September 9, 2026. The completed hull was towed to TeamCo in Heusden for interior finishing.
Innovative Design
Each vessel will be approximately 135 meters (443 feet) long, accommodating up to 170 passengers. The ships are designed with a lightweight hull that enhances smooth sailing, addressing challenges posed by low water levels in European rivers like the Danube and Rhine.
Onboard Experience
Celebrity aims to attract its loyal customer base with familiar features on board, including multiple dining options and amenities such as a top-deck bar, a Martini Bar, and Café al Bacio. The ship designs reflect an ocean ship-style, offering modern comfort.
Future Schedule
The inaugural voyage of Celebrity Compass will take place between Budapest, Hungary, and Vilshofen, Germany. Following this, the Celebrity Seeker will join the fleet in October 2027, with operations expanding to the Rhine in December. The full program in 2028 will introduce more ships, including Celebrity Wanderer, Celebrity Roamer, and Celebrity Boundless.
