Need for Speed Underground 2 Now Available on Nintendo Switch — Plus More Classic Windows Games Playable via Custom Firmware

Retro gaming enthusiasts can now enjoy classic Windows titles on their Nintendo Switch, thanks to a homebrew application called Wine-NX. A recent Twitter/X video showcased Need for Speed Underground 2 running smoothly on the device, highlighting the potential for older PC games on the Switch’s hardware.

According to user reports, other games such as Quake III and OpenTTD are also playable, with WarCraft III nearing completion. The performance for NFSU2 varies, achieving around 20–45 frames per second at default settings with the CPU overclocked. Similarly, OpenTTD can run at 60 fps, and Quake III hits about 37 fps at 720p resolution.

Wine-NX is essentially a port of Wine, enabling Windows applications on the Switch, and uses Box64’s ARM64 dynarec for translating x86 code. While audio and touchscreen support are included, the setup requires a Nintendo Switch with compatible firmware and homebrew capabilities.

This development marks an exciting phase for the Switch community, as it opens the door to a wider library of classic games.
