The Vibrant Presence of Traditional Chinese Sports Culture in Hungary

The 6th Family and Friends Gathering of the Hungarian Chan Wu Federation took place on September 13, 2026, on Margaret Island, Budapest. The event showcased traditional Chinese sports and culture, including lion dancing, various martial arts demonstrations like Yongchunquan, Shaolinquan, and Taijiquan, as well as cultural activities such as tea ceremonies and calligraphy.

Participants ranged from children to older practitioners. Istvan Vargo, the president of the federation, stated there are about 300 to 400 participants, with 100 attending this year’s gathering. The event attracted around 3,000 regular wushu practitioners in Hungary.

Notable figures included 14-year-old Rusz Levente Andre, who has been performing lion dance, and 17-year-old Pinter Kuncna Luna, who practices Shaolinquan. The event highlighted how these traditional practices have become part of everyday life in Hungary. The federation plans to host the European Wushu Championships in 2027 and anticipates a record high for participation in the upcoming national competition.
