The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has announced a second round of funding for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, awarding $14.4 million from the National Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (NEVI) Program to eight businesses. These funds will be used to construct and operate charging stations at 14 locations, including Asheboro, Columbus, High Point, Kinston, Raleigh, Wadesboro, and Weaverville.
This initiative is in response to the growing number of registered electric vehicles in the state, with NCDOT’s State Initiatives Manager, Heather Hildebrandt, emphasizing the importance of expanding the charging network to support efficient and eco-friendly travel. The total federal funding for North Carolina through the NEVI program amounts to $109 million, which covers costs for the procurement, installation, and operation of charging stations along interstates, highways, and in communities.
The statewide electric vehicle charging network is expected to be completed within three years, with plans for future installations in rural areas to meet local demand.
