Local Films Showcase Filipino American Stories in Kailua
This Saturday, Kailua Cinemas will host the “Aloha Meets Mabuhay” screening, featuring two local films that celebrate Filipino American resilience, culture, and healing.
Filipino Association of University Women President Michelle Cruz Skinner and filmmaker Angelica Yulo-Batin Quinn discussed the event on HNN’s Sunrise. The screening includes Quinn’s award-winning short film “Sira,” which explores a survivor’s journey through domestic violence, inspired by Quinn’s own experiences. The second film, “Along Comes Larry” by Rick Quan, honors legendary Filipino American musician Larry Ramos, the first Asian American Grammy winner.
Skinner emphasized the importance of sharing Filipino stories, noting that Filipinos represent about a quarter of Hawaii’s population. “FAUW’s mission is to educate the public on the arts, culture, history, traditions, and values of Filipinos,” she stated.
Tickets for “Aloha Meets Mabuhay” can be purchased at KailuaCinemas.com. The FAUW also invites the community to participate in events like the “Letter to My Parents” writing contest and a parol-making event on Sakada Day. More information can be found at fauwhawaii.org.
