The African Festival of Arts and Culture is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 26, from noon to 9 p.m. in downtown Iowa City, specifically on the Pedestrian Mall. This year marks its third iteration, following last year’s successful event that attracted over 5,000 attendees.
The festival will showcase rich cultural experiences from more than 20 African countries, featuring a parade of nations fashion show, diverse African cuisines, and performances from groups like the Magnificat choir and a children’s dance troupe from Congo. Attendees will also have the chance to explore various vendor offerings, including traditional clothing, Sudanese perfumes, and fine art.
Planning committee chair Sunday Goshit emphasized that the festival aims to bridge cultures and enhance the understanding of African traditions among Iowa residents. Several local organizations, including the African Communities Network of Iowa and the Refugee and Immigrant Association, are collaborating to bring this vibrant celebration to life.
Volunteers are also being sought to help with the event, providing an opportunity for community involvement.
