Kaua‘i County Struggles Post-Hurricane Lowell

Mayor’s Statement:
Kaua‘i County Mayor Derek Kawakami announced that now is not the optimal time for tourists to visit the island, which is still in recovery from Hurricane Lowell. He assured that once the island is prepared to handle increased tourist capacity, it would gladly welcome visitors.

Tourism Impact:
Tourism plays a crucial role in Kaua‘i’s economy, with about 102,000 tourists visiting in September. However, the recent hurricane has affected tourist areas significantly, including coastal regions that faced severe weather conditions.

Current Recovery Status:
As of Saturday, power restoration efforts have made progress, with about 24% of Kauaʻi still without electricity, a stark decline from over 90% post-storm. Recovery teams are clearing roads and restoring services.

Visitor Guidance:
The Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau advised potential travelers to either reschedule their trips or consider visiting other Hawaiian islands. The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority is urging travelers still planning to visit to remain respectful and mindful of the ongoing recovery.

Airport and Local Businesses:
Līhuʻe Airport, which was closed shortly after the hurricane, has reopened, though initial chaos has subsided. Local businesses, including Kaua‘i Beach Boys, reported a noticeable decline in activity, reflecting the impact of the hurricane.

Visiting the Island:
Amid the recovery, some tourists, like Tammy McCants, enjoyed their trips while expressing concern for the island’s damaged areas. Many attractions remain quiet, and local workers are hopeful for a quicker return to normalcy, urging anyone considering a visit to be patient and respectful.

Future Outlook:
Mayor Kawakami emphasized the importance of the visitor industry in aiding recovery efforts, encouraging flexibility in travel plans for those making long-term arrangements. The general sentiment is to restore Kaua‘i to its vibrant self while prioritizing community safety and wellbeing.
