Sean McVay’s travel risk leads to a sluggish start for the Rams in their season opener.

The Rams had a disastrous start to the season, arriving in Melbourne just 28 hours prior to their opener. In stark contrast, the San Francisco 49ers had settled in a week early, leading to a commanding 27-7 victory over the Rams. Head coach Sean McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford received significant criticism for their performance, compounded by questionable decisions on the field.

McVay admitted to being outcoached and proclaimed it a humbling experience. A pivotal moment came in the third quarter, when instead of opting for a pass to star receiver Davante Adams or a run with Kyren Williams, McVay called a quarterback sneak for the aging Stafford, who hasn’t scored a rushing touchdown in four years. Predictably, the 49ers capitalized on this miscalculation.

Despite attempts to dismiss the impact of their travel schedule, it was evident that the Rams struggled with execution. Stafford’s performance was lackluster, reflecting the overall team sentiment that they need to improve significantly. The Rams, despite the loss, still maintain their status as Super Bowl contenders, indicating that this performance may be an outlier rather than a trend.
