Dogs at Austin Pets Alive! support one another through the flooding emergency.

AUSTIN, Texas — When the social and outgoing meets the terrified and isolated, something special happens.

This July, the flooding in South Central Texas prompted Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) to urgently pair shelter dogs to make space for emergency rescues. In a surprising match, the bubbly dog Amity was paired with Gibby, a dog that often hid in the back of his kennel.

As APA! took in animals impacted by the flood, they quickly doubled the occupancy in kennels while processing fosters and adoptions. The choice to pair Gibby and Amity came easily since Gibby showed a preference for Amity during playgroups. However, no one anticipated the profound transformation their friendship would ignite.

APA! emphasizes the importance of emotional well-being, going beyond basic shelter needs. For Gibby, Amity provided a form of support that no human could replicate, helping him find his confidence.

During the flood response, both dogs were placed in short-term foster homes. Once separated, Gibby reverted to his nervous state, but when reunited with Amity, he blossomed. His newfound courage eventually led to being adopted into a loving home.

“Once I heard the story of how he came in shy but grew confident, with Amity’s help, I knew he was the one,” said Gibby’s adopter. “I’m forever grateful to Amity and Austin Pets Alive! for bringing us together!”

As for Amity, she has not yet been adopted.
