Dear Animal Lover At A Distance,
It’s understandable to want to enjoy wildlife without having them too close for comfort! Skunks can indeed be beneficial, as they help control grubs and insects, but having one on your enclosed porch is not ideal.
Here’s what you can do to encourage the skunk to leave:
-
Noise: Place a radio outside playing loud music—something with a strong bass is best, as the vibrations can deter skunks.
-
Pungent Smells: Set out a container with vinegar and a rag inside. Skunks dislike strong odors, so this can help encourage them to vacate.
-
Lighting: Keep a floodlight on at night. Skunks prefer dark, secluded areas, so bright lights will make your porch less inviting.
-
Moisture: If possible, make the area damp (without damaging any structures) as skunks are not fond of wet environments.
-
Remove Food Sources: Ensure there’s no accessible food, whether from pet food left outside, open garbage, or bird feeders.
Additional Information:
-
For guidance specifically in Massachusetts, consult state wildlife resources. Remember, relocating wildlife can be harmful and is often illegal.
-
If larger wildlife like bears become an issue, playing the sound of barking dogs can be effective.
Wildlife is fascinating, but it’s best for you and the animals to keep a healthy distance. Good luck!
Best,
