Niamh McAleenan-McQuade and Clare Reilly, A-level students from Sacred Heart Grammar School in Newry, are juggling their studies with part-time jobs, hobbies, and volunteering at their local USPCA center. They help prepare food parcels for pets and have been recognized as finalists for a BBC Make a Difference Award in the Animal category.
Since volunteering, they’ve packed thousands of parcels. Niamh, who competes in dog agility, is passionate about animal care and finds joy in giving back. Clare, learning about grooming, cherishes the experience despite some challenges with the animals.
Jill McBurney, the USPCA volunteer coordinator, commended their contributions, emphasizing the importance of their work for families during tough times, especially noted during the pandemic. The girls’ efforts have made a significant impact within the community.
The USPCA collaboration with Sacred Heart has helped train around 30 girls over four years, offering diverse experiences. As finalists for the Animal Award, they are in good company with other noteworthy contenders supporting animal welfare.
The overall winners will be announced on September 25, during a live BBC Radio Ulster show.
