39th Trail of Tears Pow Wow Celebrates Native American Culture in Hopkinsville

HOPKINSVILLE, KY – The 39th Trail of Tears Pow Wow has drawn together tribes like the Navajo, Pawnee, Chippewa, and Cherokee, highlighting a rich celebration of Native American culture through dance and music competitions.

This celebrated event is the culmination of a year’s worth of meticulous planning. Participants travel from across the nation to partake in spirited dance competitions over a two-day weekend. The ceremonial grand entry is a notable highlight, featuring performers entering together, carrying traditional flags, and singing ancient songs to honor their historical heritage.

In a special tribute during the first grand entry on Saturday, military veterans and emergency responders were invited onto the field for a warrior’s song, marking a rare exception to the spectator policy surrounding the arena circle.

Competitors, dressed in traditional attire representing their various tribes, competed for substantial cash prizes totaling over $25,000 across age categories ranging from Tiny Tot to Golden Age. The accompanying drummers also vie for recognition. An awards ceremony is slated for Sunday at 4 p.m. to conclude the festivities.

About Hopkinsville’s Trail of Tears Commemorative Park

The concept for hosting the Pow Wow originated with the Trail of Tears Commission, Inc., meant to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Cherokee’s removal from their ancestral homelands in 1988. This event reflects the history of the Trail of Tears, which affected Hopkinsville, a critical stopping point for the Cherokees during their forced journey in the 1830s.

The Commemorative Park is situated on the site where Cherokee exiles encamped. Notably, it includes gravesites of Chief Whitepath and Fly Smith, who succumbed shortly after arriving at the Hopkinsville encampment due to severe illness.
