Pippa’s Journey: From Tragedy to Triumph
DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF) — Just 10 days ago, Pippa’s life took a tragic turn when she was struck by a car, leaving her paralyzed from the back down. She was taken to a county shelter, where, due to protocols, she remained in a kennel for three days without medical care, suffering from severe injuries.
A Lifeline from PORT
Regan Goins, the co-founder of the Pets of Ohio Rescue Team (PORT), received a call that Pippa’s life was in danger. “You need to take her or she’s going to be killed at the end of the day,” they warned. PORT specializes in rescuing strays and animals at risk of euthanasia.
Their partner vet, Evergreen in Centerville, assessed her condition. While her vital signs were stable, Pippa’s wounds had become infected during her hold at the shelter. After receiving care from the team and volunteers who kept her clean, medicated, and fed, a breakthrough moment occurred.
A Miraculous Recovery
One evening, as Pippa’s dinner was prepared, she showed unexpected determination, pulling herself up and lifting her back end. Goins described it as “a miracle.” Since then, Pippa has been working hard to regain her strength, and the shelter is optimistic about her full recovery.
Despite her traumatic experience, Pippa remains sweet and loving, eager to meet new people. Her determination is fueled by her love for food; it was her passion for dinner that inspired her first steps.
A Bright Future Ahead
Pippa is now available for fostering or adoption. PORT is committed to supporting their dogs medically and behaviorally even after adoption.
“She’s a perfect case of what a resilient dog can do and come out on the other end,” Goins said. Pippa’s story is a testament to the power of second chances and compassionate care.
