On September 5, nearly 100 relatives gathered in Tahlequah to honor Nancy Ward, a prominent Cherokee leader known as Nanyehi. Celebrated for her peace efforts between the Cherokees and Americans during the Revolutionary War, Ward’s legacy continues to inspire. The event coincided with the Cherokee National Holiday, showcasing a growing recognition of her contributions, as highlighted by genealogist David Hampton.
During the event, stories of Ward’s influence were shared, noting her role as a political and spiritual leader. The Association of the Descendants of Nancy Ward, formed in 1993, provides a community for those tracing their lineage to her. The celebration featured a musical titled “Nanyehi – The Story of Nancy Ward,” which has been staged numerous times, reaffirming her cultural significance within the Cherokee community.
Notable attendees included actor Wes Studi, a direct descendant of Ward, who expressed the importance of family connections during the festivities. The upcoming performances of the musical are scheduled for October 9 and 10 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa, continuing the legacy of Ward’s impactful life. Membership in the association is encouraged, extending an invitation to both direct descendants and associate members.
