Sun Valley is not just a ski paradise; it’s a delightful summer and fall destination as well. After a recent family trip, we discovered that biking around Ketchum, indulging in delicious food, and enjoying the area’s beautiful landscapes made for a perfect getaway.
Easy Access
Getting to Sun Valley from Seattle is a breeze with a quick, direct flight to Friedman Memorial Airport. Within an hour, you could be enjoying lunch amid stunning mountain views.
Fall Beauty
Visiting in the fall offers cooler weather and fewer crowds, highlighting the gorgeous golden aspens. Peak color typically appears from late September to mid-October.
Where to Stay
Downtown Ketchum has excellent hotel options:
- Hotel Ketchum: Located on Main Street with family-friendly amenities like an outdoor heated pool and complimentary breakfast.
- Tamarack Lodge: Offers spacious Family Suites, an indoor pool, and proximity to shops and restaurants.
- Sun Valley Resort: A classic option with various accommodations, from Lodge rooms to larger townhomes with kitchens.
Biking Adventures
Exploring via bike was a family favorite. Renting e-bikes allowed us to easily navigate the beautiful Wood River Trail, perfect for families. The paved path connects several towns and offers stunning scenery, especially in the fall.
Casual Wandering
Ketchum’s compact downtown is ideal for strolling. We loved popping into local shops like EJ Kids The Toy Store and Chapter One Bookstore, each offering unique finds.
Mountain Experiences
Riding the Roundhouse Express Gondola up Bald Mountain was a highlight. Breathtaking views and a cozy meal at the Roundhouse made it a memorable experience. Keep in mind that fall visitors might miss summer lift service after Labor Day, but there are still plenty of hiking opportunities.
Delightful Dining
From upscale options like Fiamma, focusing on seasonal ingredients, to local favorites like Grumpy’s, there’s something for every palate. Breakfast at The Kneadery and ice cream treats at Mountain High Creamery are musts.
Relax and Unwind
Amidst the activities, we cherished unstructured time—swimming, wandering, and simply enjoying the moment. Fall seems perfect for a trip centered around relaxation.
Why Autumn?
Visiting Sun Valley in the fall offers stunning landscapes, fewer crowds, and plenty of activities without the rush. For Seattle families, the ease of access combined with a change of scenery makes it an ideal escape.
