Preparing for Severe Weather: Tips for Animal Safety

As September marks National Preparedness Month, it’s crucial to develop a plan to safeguard both your family and animals during emergencies like hurricanes, flooding, or severe storms. Here are some tips from Dean Steven Marks of the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine to keep your animals safe:

1. Know Your Plan B

Identify pet-friendly hotels, shelters, and veterinary clinics outside your area before an evacuation becomes necessary. Ensure you have a safe trailer accessible for transporting larger animals.

2. Think Beyond Small Pets

For horses and livestock, identify the safest pastures during severe weather. Have a plan for transporting them and ensure they can access food and fresh water.

3. Keep an Animal Emergency Info File

Maintain a file with current photos, vaccination records, medication lists, microchip information, and important veterinary contacts for quick access in emergencies.

4. Prepare for Power Outages

Have backup plans for water pumps and refrigeration of medications. Consider solar or gas generators to keep essential equipment running.

5. Practice Before the Emergency

Familiarize animals with carriers, trailers, and vehicles, and ensure they can be handled easily before an evacuation is necessary.

6. Shelter in Place

If it’s safer to stay at home, ensure you have extra food, water, medicine, and other essentials for several days.

Dean Marks emphasizes that the goal of the College of Veterinary Medicine is to prepare veterinarians who understand the needs of all animals, including family pets and livestock. Being prepared is a vital part of responsible animal care during severe weather events.
