Dolly Parton funded her longtime driver’s gender-affirming treatment | Entertainment News

Dolly Parton, who passed away on August 25 at the age of 80, was known not just for her musical brilliance but also for her genuine kindness and generosity. One poignant example of her compassionate nature is her support for her longtime assistant and friend, Jason Pirro. In the 1990s, Dolly Parton covered the costs of Pirro’s gender-affirming care during his transition.

Pirro, who was often seen as Parton’s chauffeur and trusted adviser, expressed deep appreciation for her unwavering support, especially after a tabloid publicly outed him as a transgender man. Elissa Altman, who edited Parton’s autobiography, highlighted the singer’s humanity and decency in an emotional tribute, emphasizing that her kindness was sincere and not just for show.

Despite attempts by tabloids to sensationalize Pirro’s story, he maintained that Parton was simply a caring individual who knew him well. In a playful quote, she once stated, “If I were a man, I’d be a drag queen,” underscoring her allies’ connection to the LGBTQ+ community.

While their friendship remained largely private, Parton acknowledged Pirro in the liner notes of her 2016 album and in her 2023 memoir, celebrating his loyalty and support. Following a bill in Tennessee that discriminated against transgender individuals, Parton voiced her commitment to treating everyone with respect and love, affirming her belief that all people are deserving of kindness and acceptance.
