Duke Energy Florida seeks state approval for rate reduction, set to take effect in January 2027.

Duke Energy Florida has requested a reduction in electricity rates beginning January 2027, a notable move amid rising utility bills. If approved by the Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC), residential customers using 1,000 kilowatt-hours a month would see a monthly decrease of $0.71 compared to December 2026. Commercial and industrial customers could experience reductions ranging from 0.8% to 3.6%, depending on their usage.

Key Details

  • Rate Reduction Request: Filed from Duke Energy Florida’s St. Petersburg headquarters, aiming for a January 2027 effective date.
  • Cost Breakdown: Rate structures include fuel costs, renewable energy charges, and infrastructure fees. The decrease is largely due to anticipated lower fuel costs and the cancellation of a previously scheduled 2% base rate hike attributable to a new tax strategy yielding about $50 million in customer savings.
  • Investment in Infrastructure: Although investments in grid improvements are rising slightly to enhance reliability, they will not outweigh the overall savings.

Long-Term Strategies

Duke Energy Florida aims for sustainable cost control through initiatives like solar expansion, which helps mitigate the impact of fuel price fluctuations, and efficiency upgrades at natural gas plants.

Customer Support

In conjunction with this request, Duke Energy Florida continues to offer programs to assist customers with current energy costs, including free home energy assessments and flexible payment options.

The FPSC’s approval is necessary for these proposed changes to take effect. While the rate reduction is a positive development for customers, ongoing investments in infrastructure highlight the company’s commitment to reliability.
