Traverse City Light & Power Announces Rate Hike and New Assistance Program
On Tuesday, members of the Traverse City Light & Power (TCLP) board approved a 5% rate increase for customers, effective October 1. This is the fourth rate hike since 2020, driven by the need for grid modernization, reliability, and rising costs.
Rate Increase Details:
- Residential Impact:
- Low-consumption households will see an increase of approximately $3.74 per month.
- Mid-consumption households: $5.60 more.
- High-consumption homes: $10.10 more.
- Commercial Customers: Average increase of just under $13 monthly.
- Industrial Customers: Expected increase of just over $728 monthly.
Energy Assistance Program:
Starting October 1, TCLP will launch a new energy assistance program in collaboration with The Salvation Army. This is aimed at helping low-income customers manage their electric and heating costs.
- Eligibility: Customers must meet state income guidelines, be Michigan residents, and have an active TCLP account.
- Applications will open on October 1 and will be referred to The Salvation Army for eligibility assessment.
Community Funding:
TCLP’s board also authorized funding for several community projects:
- $40,000 for Habitat for Humanity for a solar energy system.
- $16,500 for lighting upgrades at Hickory Hills Ski Area.
- $12,500 for tree planting in The Village of Grand Traverse Commons.
Additionally, TCLP plans to provide $125,000 for a hybrid energy-efficient HVAC system at Central Grade School, pending approval by the Traverse City Area Public Schools board.
Community Feedback:
During public comments, residents shared their concerns regarding rising costs. Board member John Taylor acknowledged these worries but emphasized that the energy industry is facing unprecedented costs, making gradual increases preferable to sudden large hikes.
