TV Review: “Last Seen”
In “Last Seen,” an Australian thriller, a father’s quest to uncover the truth about his missing daughter unfolds, but the core mystery isn’t truly mysterious for long. Despite numerous revelations, the show often feels anticlimactic, delivering tragic inevitability rather than catharsis.
Initially, the series captivates as the troubled patriarch (played by Patrick Brammall) grapples with despair and the struggle to salvage hope. The opening episodes withhold traditional genre elements, focusing instead on the painful fractures within the characters’ lives. Unfortunately, this intriguing premise gradually succumbs to clichéd storytelling, slipping into familiar tropes rather than exploring the depths of grief and loss.
Adapted from Ryan David Jahn’s novel “The Dispatcher,” the show shifts the setting from Texas to Australia but fails to capitalize on its potential. Though it conveys the characters’ journeys, an extended flashback episode disrupts the flow without delivering emotional impact.
Bringing depth to his role, Brammall’s performance demonstrates significant effort, yet he’s hindered by the material. Moments of genuine emotional resonance are frequently diluted, overshadowed by generic musical cues and forced plot devices that reveal a troubling lack of confidence.
Despite starting off with darkly poetic intentions, the series takes a safer route, resolving painful elements too neatly with predictable twists. Attempts to ramp up tension feel unearned, leaving viewers wondering if maintaining its original tone might have led to a more resonant story. Sadly, the answer remains elusive, suggesting that “Last Seen” could have benefitted from greater ambition.
