LONDON (AP) — An air traffic control problem led to significant disruptions across Britain on Tuesday, affecting over 1,000 flights. Passengers found themselves stranded on runways and in terminals for hours, as reported by flight-tracking service Flightradar24.
The UK’s National Air Traffic Services announced that a problem in their flight processing system had been resolved by the evening. However, the effects lingered, causing delays across 15 airports in the UK and beyond as airlines attempted to manage a large backlog of delayed flights.

Josie Donoghue described her experience at Gatwick Airport, where she spent three hours on a Ryanair flight to Ireland that was ultimately canceled. She likened the chaos to “trying to get out of Alcatraz,” calling it an “absolute nightmare.”
At Heathrow Airport, although departures resumed, arrivals were suspended for the night due to ongoing disruptions. Passengers on a British Airways flight to Baltimore, who endured four hours stuck on the ground, faced further complications when they arrived at baggage claim, learning there was no assistance available for their misplaced luggage.
Airline Responses
British Airways reported the cancellation or diversion of over 100 flights, while Ryanair indicated that more than 65,000 passengers had faced disruptions, leading to over 50 canceled flights. A spokesperson for British Airways expressed frustration over the severity of the incident, which was considered “entirely out of our control.”
Passengers took to social media to voice their dissatisfaction regarding long waits and poor communication from airlines. Airports affected by the disruption included Stansted, City in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Gatwick, and several locations in Scotland. Travelers were advised to check flight statuses with their respective airlines.
Budget airline EasyJet also noted that the system failure resulted in the inability to operate some flights and caused delays throughout Europe.
