Aaron Donald, the standout defensive tackle for the Los Angeles Rams, will not be making the trip to Australia for the Week 1 game against the San Francisco 49ers. This decision comes as the Rams want to give him additional time to prepare after being out of the league for two years and since his return announcement on August 30.
Head coach Sean McVay stated that while Donald is progressing well and will be ready “sooner rather than later,” they believe this decision is in the best interest of both him and the team. McVay emphasized the importance of allowing Donald to take care of himself and manage his readiness without rushing back into action, especially given the quick turnaround required for the trip.
The Rams have been managing their roster without expecting Donald to participate, benefiting from a strong defensive line depth that includes players like Kobie Turner and Poona Ford. With Donald on the Commissioner Exempt List, he won’t count against the roster until he plays or until after September 11. He is expected to join the active roster after the game and focus on preparation for Week 2 against the New York Giants.
The decision, while disappointing, aligns with the Rams’ ongoing strategy to ensure Donald is fully prepared for his return.
