Next Tuesday, French energy sector unions plan to strike in response to the July recommendation by France’s Court of Auditors to limit wage growth and reduce employee benefits. This has raised significant concerns among unions, which view discounted utility rates as essential to worker compensation.
State-owned nuclear operator EDF and major gas terminal operators have already issued strike notices. Unions argue that providing preferential access to energy services promotes responsible consumption and fosters employee loyalty. However, the Court of Auditors estimated that this benefit would cost EDF over €700 million in 2024 alone.
The strike could potentially disrupt gas deliveries throughout Europe and lead to power shortages amid already high wholesale electricity prices. The government is currently in discussions to comply with the Court’s recommendations, but further industrial action remains a possibility.
