Research Reveals Moroccan ‘No Sugar’ Beverages Have Up to 5.81g of Sugar per 100mL

The recent study conducted in Morocco highlights concerning discrepancies between beverage labels and their actual content. Researchers found that drinks marketed as zero-sugar can contain significant amounts of sugar, with one recording as much as 5.81 grams per 100 milliliters. This study, the first of its kind in Morocco, combined chemical analysis of beverage additives with a survey of consumer behavior, revealing a pattern of undeclared ingredients, including sugars, sweeteners, and preservatives.

The analysis of 46 soft and energy drinks showed that regular sodas contained an average of 10.2 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters, while zero-sugar drinks averaged about 0.6 grams but often included undeclared sugars, such as fructose. Furthermore, additives like acesulfame K and aspartame showed up in many drinks without being listed on labels, raising health concerns, particularly for individuals with conditions like phenylketonuria.

Caffeine levels in some energy drinks approached legal limits, and many products did not comply with labeling laws, with only 28.3% fully meeting regulations. The survey of 412 university students indicated a lack of awareness about sweeteners and ingredient labels, underscoring the need for better consumer education and stricter regulatory oversight.

Overall, the researchers emphasized the importance of clear labeling, consumer literacy, and regular testing to ensure public safety and informed choices.
