Consumers Energy has decided to extend the decision timeline for the sale of 13 hydroelectric dams by an additional 60 days as of Tuesday. This extension aims to give all parties involved in the regulatory process time to address existing concerns.
Adam Monroe, Consumers Energy’s executive director of hydro operations, expressed optimism, stating, “This is great news for anyone who cares about our dams and the Michigan communities that depend on them.” He emphasized the company’s commitment to ensuring the safe and responsible operation of the dams going forward.
Previously, Consumers Energy announced a proposal for a $270 million hydro safety fund if the sale to Confluence Hydro proceeds. However, if the transaction does not occur, the company plans to decommission the dams completely.
For additional context, there are related discussions and concerns regarding the sale, including a call from Governor Gretchen Whitmer for regulators to reject the proposed sale.
