Restarting Iowa’s Only Nuclear Power Plant
PALO, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa’s sole nuclear power plant is set to resume operations following a significant federal financial commitment. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a loan of up to $1.9 billion to NextEra Energy, intended to facilitate the restart of the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Palo.
The funding aims to reactivate the 615-megawatt facility, supporting federal initiatives to bolster the nuclear energy sector and ensure dependable baseload electricity. Once back online, the plant is projected to supply power to nearly 500,000 homes in Iowa and the Midwest.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The restart is expected to bring notable economic benefits:
- Construction Phase: Approximately 1,500 jobs will be created during the construction.
- Operational Phase: Over 450 permanent jobs will be sustained once the plant is operational.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy James P. Danly emphasized that restoring 615 megawatts of reliable energy will lower electricity costs while generating thousands of jobs.
Next Steps for Operations
Duane Arnold ceased operations in 2020. Although the financing deal has been secured, the plant cannot immediately operate; NextEra Energy must first acquire necessary licenses from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). A timeline for the plant’s return to service is still pending these approvals.
