Thailand is planning to generate up to 89% of its electricity from cleaner sources by 2050, as part of a new, more ambitious long-term power strategy currently open for public consultation. The draft plan includes a minimum clean energy target of 65%, with options for higher shares. This initiative aims to meet rising electricity demand from sectors like data centers and advanced manufacturing while reducing reliance on imported natural gas, which contributes to instability due to fluctuating global prices.
Energy Ministry officials emphasize the importance of transitioning to clean energy to align with global efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Significant investments are anticipated in renewable energy, with a forecast of adding 51,000 megawatts of capacity by 2037, primarily from solar, wind, and battery storage, along with new natural gas and nuclear power sources.
The plan may require up to 700 billion baht (approximately $21 billion) for updating power infrastructure and integrating renewable energy technologies. Additionally, the government is exploring options for nuclear power, including small modular reactors. Thailand’s updated power development plan aims for net-zero emissions by 2050, reflecting increasing global focus on sustainability.
