Busy Labor Day Travel Weekend in Norfolk, Va.
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Millions were on the move this Labor Day holiday weekend, with many travelers making pit stops in Hampton Roads on their way home.
Samantha Porter, a traveler heading to Chicago Midway, shared her journey: “We’re going to get out of here and go to Chicago Midway, so that’s where we’re headed.”
Others, like Doug Moore, reminisced about their roots. “I grew up in Newport News, and now being in North Carolina in the Piedmont area, I do miss the water,” he reflected, although he was grateful to time his trip to avoid the usual traffic snags.
Local resident Marcus Tate emphasized the importance of these moments, stating, “It feels good you know we all work pretty hard.”
At Norfolk International Airport, staff worked diligently to ensure safe departures. Porter advised fellow travelers, “Traffic’s gonna be crazy on the way home. Just be safe.”
David Barber, another local, expressed gratitude for the flight crews ensuring safe travels: “We’re very blessed to have the flight crews and we pray for their safety too.”
The new Gateside by TSA PreCheck program, allowing non-ticketed visitors to wait at the gate with loved ones, is not yet available at ORF but has garnered interest from travelers. Porter noted, “It’d be great if we could go it again,” echoing sentiments from other residents about the convenience it would bring.
Overall, the holiday weekend concluded another busy travel period, with AAA predicting Thanksgiving will be the next peak time for travelers.
