A woman is exploring legal options after being injured in a dog attack in Harford County. Shantel Washington reported the incident occurred on August 27 while she was walking in her neighborhood, resulting in bite marks on her arms and legs.
Washington described the encounter as terrifying, stating, “It’s been really rough. I try to take it day by day.” She shared blurred images of her injuries, indicating significant damage. At the time of the attack, the dog was not leashed and accompanied by its owner.
The attack escalated as Washington tried to evade the aggressive dog. “The dog just pretty much came up on me, and as I’m trying to walk away, he bit my ankle. Then, he bit my calf. Then, he just kept biting me on my arm and my other arm and my other leg,” she explained, pleading for the owner to control the dog.
In a desperate attempt to escape, she jumped onto a car’s hood until the owner managed to regain control of the dog. Washington had to use her shirt to stop the bleeding from her severe wounds and called 911 for help, later receiving stitches at a hospital.
The Harford County Sheriff’s Office reported the dog’s owner was cited for allowing the animal to run free, a violation carrying a $30 fine. Additionally, Animal Control issued a Dangerous Dog Notice, requiring the owner to take corrective actions, such as keeping the dog in a secure area. Despite the option to surrender the dog, the owner chose to retain it.
In a statement, the Sheriff’s Office emphasized understanding the victim’s concerns while also considering the challenges faced by pet owners. They reiterated community safety while ensuring legal requirements are met.
Washington voiced her worry about the dog’s continued presence in the neighborhood, saying, “I would hate for something else to happen for Animal Control or Harford County to take it serious.” She has since engaged an attorney to explore legal avenues related to the incident.
The incident highlights the critical importance of responsible pet ownership, especially the need for leashing dogs in public areas to prevent similar occurrences.
