In Japan, a recent survey by Taisho Pharmaceutical Co. revealed that fewer than 30% of dog and cat owners prepare emergency food and water for their pets in light of potential disasters. With a week designated as pet disaster preparedness week, the company encourages pet owners to reassess their readiness and evacuation strategies to ensure their pets’ safety.
The online survey, conducted in December, included 200 dog owners and 200 cat owners aged 24 to 69. Results showed that only 25% of dog owners and 16.5% of cat owners actively stockpile supplies for emergencies. Additionally, while 30% of dog owners and 20.5% of cat owners were aware of local evacuation shelter policies regarding pets, many remain unprepared.
Established in 2021 by a nonprofit organization in Matsuyama, the pet disaster preparedness week emphasizes the importance of daily readiness. Ritsuko Miura, the association’s chairwoman, highlighted that familiarizing pets with leashes and carriers, and planning alternative safe spaces, are crucial for their well-being during emergencies.
